The 2025 Youth Salute presented by the Greater Omaha Council Bluffs Area Council on Youth Leadership recently announced an incredible local nomination. Griselda Zacarias Nicolas, a senior at Wakefield Community Schools, was selected as one of the Nebraska high school youth leaders. The Greater Omaha Council Bluffs Area Council on Youth Leadership was formed in 2018 to conduct the "Youth Salute" in nearby communities in cooperation with the National Council on Youth Leadership, a non-profit organization. Teachers, guidance counselors, and principals nominate students to apply to attend the Youth Salute event. In order to qualify, the student had to be a junior (senior class of 2025), have a 3.0 GPA or greater and have held at least two leadership roles to which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in high school, religious or community sponsored organizations. Griselda Zacarias Nicolas was offered a $2,000/year scholarship to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln totaling $8,000 over the course of 4 years. Wakefield Community Schools is very proud to have senior Griselda Zacarias Nicolas representing as a "Top Youth Leader." Congratulations to Griselda!

Wakefield Community School's very own senior, Alexia Weaver, has just been awarded the prestigious Regents Scholarship by the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Regents Scholarships are offered to residents of Nebraska who are graduating seniors of Nebraska high schools. Applicants with a minimum ACT composite of 30 and either a rank in the top 25% of their graduating class OR a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher qualify for the award.
The Regents Scholarship covers undergraduate resident tuition for full-time students and is renewable with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. The award is renewable for up to four total years or until 120 attempted credit hours are reached or a bachelor's degree is earned.
Lexie is incredibly involved at Wakefield Community Schools as she is a member of SkillsUSA, FBLA, FCCLA, One World Club, and YPAR. As of right now, Lexie plans to earn her bachelor's degree in Journalism and Media Communication. There is no doubt that Lexie has a very bright future ahead of her.
