Closing the Opportunity Gap
Maria Gonzalez, a bilingual Northeast Community College representative, came to Wakefield Community Schools today to speak with 26 of our high school English Language Learners. Maria's presentation was completely in Spanish. She spent time debunking the myth that college is unaffordable or inaccessible for them. She told her story about overcoming obstacles to achieve her goal of furthering her education. She also talked about the many opportunities students have available to them, such as the dual credit courses that Wakefield Community Schools offers through NECC. Maria answered many of the students' college related questions and plans to return to Wakefield in the spring to discuss the process of applying to college and the programs offered at NECC. Several students stayed after Maria's presentation to converse with her individually. She was a great inspiration for the students.
